A Typical Day in the Life of the Solopreneur

I thought you might enjoy seeing my typical day so here it is!  Balance is important in life and while I make an attempt you will see that I’m a little off kilter like most entrepreneurs.

In my younger days I would get up at 6am, but after you hit 40 you cherish any sleeping moment so today I get up at 6:30 am.  I only have one daughter left at home but we get up and read from the scriptures for 10-15 minutes to start the day on a spiritual note. I then hit my work out room for the physical aspect and I personally enjoy lifting weights on my M1 Inspire which I absolutely love.  I do need to spend a little more time on some type of cardiovascular exercise but I’ll take what I can get.  At 7:30am I’m in the shower, dress, eat breakfast, and read from a business book until 9am  when I start work. So in the first 2.5 hours of the day I have already given time to the spiritual, physical, and intellectual parts of my life to give me some type of balance and sanity.

9am I’m checking email and look for notifications of any problems over night from servers out on the Internet.  I also look at all sales across all customers and review the dashboard I get from ebizsuite my CRM so I can see how many leads, sales, etc. came in the day before.  I also give a quick reveiw of my google analytics to see if I have any issues on traffic drops.  Check all my affiliate accounts for analytics and sales.

10am I will fix any problems I might have found after reviewing all my reports and dashboards. From 10am-12:15pm I have reserved for follow up sales calls, support calls, and training new customers.

12:15- 1:00 is lunch – downstairs in the kitchen!  My wife is a wonderful cook!

1-6pm I do whatever needs to be done.  Set up new customers, write code to enhance our online systems ( We release a new update to our eBizSuite platform every 6 months), Create new products, reveiw all marketing methods and customer touch points to ensure a great experience for our customers.

I eat dinner in a half an hour and typically get back to work until 9:45- 10pm.  And yes I have done this for 23 years!  OK, the life of  a solopreneur doesn’t sound so sexy after all.  But let me point out a few items.

First, I never miss a meal with my family- I’m always home.  I never miss a child’s lacrosse game or concert. When I do travel for business I always take my family along and we turn it into a vacation!   Speaking of vacations I go as often as I can.  We have a summer home and a cabin in the mountains where we spend most weekends in the summer and I love to go to Hawaii, Miami, and every 3 years I go on a big excursion across the pond!

Second, my business is so much fun, it is more like a hobby to me so I feel like I’m playing all day long –so long hours from your perspective don’t seem so long to me.  I’d probably do what I’m doing if I wasn’t getting paid.

So to sum it up, do something you love and you’ll never tire and you’ll feel like you’ve lived your life to the fullest!

The Next Billion Dollar Idea

I wrote in a post some time ago that the next billion dollar idea will be the one that figures out how to deliver ads to consumers that aren’t subject to “Ad Blindness”. You see, ad blindness is where people get used to ads and eventually block them out and don’t even look at them.

Originally, when Google released Adwords there was a typical 20-30% click through rate on those ads down the side of your search.  With ad blindness setting in, today’s typical clickthrough rate is a dismal less than .5%.  Unfortunately, I wasn’t paying attention while some people stumbled upon something most amazing. Build a site where people are willing to give up personal information.  Once you have the information, you can deliver ads based on demographics instead of search.  Google, Bing, Yahoo all deliver ads based on search which isn’t always helpful because they have no idea who is behind the IP address of the person visiting.  Facebook delivers ads based on targeted demographics.  I can deliver an ad to women between the ages of 19-22 that are single that live in California and are interested in exercise. Facebook’s ad blindness has not yet kicked in and I’m seeing a lot of good targeted traffic with excellent click through rates.

So what is the next big place for advertisers to be spending their money?  I hate to even say it because then everyone knows one of my secrets and competition will increase.  Who has been silently collecting personal information on millions and could potentially deliver ads based on demographics? Dating Sites.  I’m not going to say more, as I let your mind wander to the conclusion that you need to get started on your next billion dollar idea.  The race is on. GO!

Land Line to VOIP

Today was the day I was supposed to cut the cable on my land line with Qwest and move to Comcast’s Business VOIP. I’ll be honest, in 23 years when I have made major changes like this in the past it has never gone well when trying to change providers, especially if you plan to keep existing phone numbers. I wasn’t disappointed. It was and is still a pain to get the job done and in the end, it looks like I get to start over. The Comcast guy showed up in a timely manner. We quickly moved cable from one place to another (a story for another day perhaps) and the VOIP box was installed and we got a dial tone! But while I as figuring out how I would connect the cable to my smart home setup I got a knock at the door and the Comcast guy was back. Someone had cancelled the order because they couldn’t verify the toll-free number was mine; therefore, the order was cancelled and I get to start all over. I have faxed in proof but now I need to re-signup and start over. Oh well, in the end it should be worth it. I’ll be paying less, long distance is included in the price and I get a ton of new features that qwest used to charge me extra for, so I can be patient. It is actually quite odd that I haven’t moved my business to VOIP sooner because I’ve always been an early adopter. And while I hoped my wiating would allow everyone to get the bugs worked out, guess what? They are still working out the kinks after 10 years! Talk back and let me know your experience.

Testing, Testing, Testing

The reality of being in business is that you don’t always know where you are going to end up with in the end. Sure you can put a plan together and have a strategy for direction but utlimately, you don’t actually know if someone is going to buy your widget/service without actually testing the market. In years past, testing a market was an expensive proposition but today with the Internet, you can easily test a market for $100 in under a week. Simply put up an offer on a website with WordPress and a free theme (cost $8/mo hosting) Put $82 in a google adwords account and you can easily split test the adwords ads and you could actually set up a second offer page and send traffic to both to see which keywords to use and which ads to use. You’ll come up with a conversion rate and have an indicatin on how responsive your target market is to your offering. But until you test – it’s all talk!
