Black Friday

Category : Marketing Online, Traffic Generation

So I’ve been in business since 1987 and it has never occured to me to take advantage of an opportunity to pick up some otherwise hesitant customers with some special promotions and utilizing Black Friday to do it. Go figure.

It is the perfect time to increase business as all business has always died down during December when you are selling B2B (Business to Business).  It seems everyone is interested in the Holiday Season and not working– so things come to a screaching halt.  You do have a few planners that are working to get a project done for the next year but they are few and far between.

Host Gator

HostGator

So on Tuesday (2 Days before Thanksgiving) I got an email from HostGator, my favorite blog hoster, saying they were going to have a special promotion for affiliates to push for Black Friday.  But they sent no details until the next day Wednesday.  The promotion was awsome but there wasn’t much time to promote it because it takes time to put an email together and get it delivered to 1.5 million subscribers.  It actually takes 3 days just to get that many delivered!

So it seemed they saw Black Friday as an after thought just like I have been doing for the last 23 years. Because you need to have time to put together your promotions and get it to your affiliates for it to be a huge success.  So this is the last year that I don’t take Black Friday seriously.  I will plan for it every year from here on out.  Make sure you do the same regardless of whether you sell to Consumers (B2C) or Businesses (B2B).

BTW, I was still able to salvage some sales for HostGator on Black Friday – it made the whole Holiday that much more pleasant knowing I was making money while haning out with family!

Entrepreneurial Enthusiasm

Category : Solopreneur Skillset, Tips and Tricks

Last week I had the opportunity to speak to a group of 1,100 people.  Knowing the importance of my message, I stewed quite a bit about what I might say that would be meaningful to such an audience.  In the end I basically rewrote what I would say just the night before so I wasn’t sure just how things would turn out.  After I completed the delivery of my message I was greeted by many who wanted to say thanks for my remarks.  And since that time I have received postcards and thank you letters that were delivered in the mail.

Now I’ll be honest with you, I am not some great orator and I rarely speak to groups, certainly not one that large, but I have one trick up my sleeve that seems to always pull through even when I am unprepared or unsure of my speaking skills and that is ENTHUSIASM!

You have hopefully seen it before.  You have someone standing before you that you have never met and they have so much enthusiam and positive energy that you feel an immediate connection.  You want to hang out with this person.  You just know that your life would be diffferent if you could always associate with people like and I can assure you it would.

So add enthusiasm as a required skill for the solo entrepreneur and you’ll be more believeable, have more people that want to hang out with you and you’ll sell more and be more successful.  I guarantee it!

A Typical Day in the Life of the Solopreneur

1

Category : Go Solo, Time Management

I thought you might enjoy seeing my typical day so here it is!  Balance is important in life and while I make an attempt you will see that I’m a little off kilter like most entrepreneurs.

In my younger days I would get up at 6am, but after you hit 40 you cherish any sleeping moment so today I get up at 6:30 am.  I only have one daughter left at home but we get up and read from the scriptures for 10-15 minutes to start the day on a spiritual note. I then hit my work out room for the physical aspect and I personally enjoy lifting weights on my M1 Inspire which I absolutely love.  I do need to spend a little more time on some type of cardiovascular exercise but I’ll take what I can get.  At 7:30am I’m in the shower, dress, eat breakfast, and read from a business book until 9am  when I start work. So in the first 2.5 hours of the day I have already given time to the spiritual, physical, and intellectual parts of my life to give me some type of balance and sanity.

9am I’m checking email and look for notifications of any problems over night from servers out on the Internet.  I also look at all sales across all customers and review the dashboard I get from ebizsuite my CRM so I can see how many leads, sales, etc. came in the day before.  I also give a quick reveiw of my google analytics to see if I have any issues on traffic drops.  Check all my affiliate accounts for analytics and sales.

10am I will fix any problems I might have found after reviewing all my reports and dashboards. From 10am-12:15pm I have reserved for follow up sales calls, support calls, and training new customers.

12:15- 1:00 is lunch – downstairs in the kitchen!  My wife is a wonderful cook!

1-6pm I do whatever needs to be done.  Set up new customers, write code to enhance our online systems ( We release a new update to our eBizSuite platform every 6 months), Create new products, reveiw all marketing methods and customer touch points to ensure a great experience for our customers.

I eat dinner in a half an hour and typically get back to work until 9:45- 10pm.  And yes I have done this for 23 years!  OK, the life of  a solopreneur doesn’t sound so sexy after all.  But let me point out a few items.

First, I never miss a meal with my family- I’m always home.  I never miss a child’s lacrosse game or concert. When I do travel for business I always take my family along and we turn it into a vacation!   Speaking of vacations I go as often as I can.  We have a summer home and a cabin in the mountains where we spend most weekends in the summer and I love to go to Hawaii, Miami, and every 3 years I go on a big excursion across the pond!

Second, my business is so much fun, it is more like a hobby to me so I feel like I’m playing all day long –so long hours from your perspective don’t seem so long to me.  I’d probably do what I’m doing if I wasn’t getting paid.

So to sum it up, do something you love and you’ll never tire and you’ll feel like you’ve lived your life to the fullest!
